Soper's Hole, Tortola BVI

Surely one of the most charming natural harbors in the Caribbean, Soper’s Hole (the general area is also called West End) is also a full-service marina, ferry hub and supply center. This place has everything the cruising sailor could need, in a picture book setting.

Approach: As easy as it gets from just about anywhere. Totally open to the west with no hazards, except Frenchman’s Cay on the South and mainland Tortola on the north. Just keep your eyes open for other boats and fast-moving ferry traffic coming to and from the ferry docks on the north side of the bay. There is a channel marked for their use, and this should be kept clear.

Anchoring/Mooring: There are mooring balls up in the bay (white with blue stripe) that are free for day use, and charged for overnight (pay at the Soper’s Hole Marina office). If a buoy is looking tattered at all, it’s probably private and should be left alone. You can also anchor further up in the head of the bay (northeastish) in mostly sand in a deepish 20-45 feet. We prefer to grab a ball since the breezes are more delightful out in the open and there’s generally very little wake action.

Ashore: Soper’s Hole Wharf takes up most of the south shore of the bay, and is surely worth a leisurely stroll, hitting the Pusser’s bar, numerous charming shops and well-stocked grocery markets. There is also a dive shop, fuel (and trash right near), ice, water, ATM and even an ice cream shop. It should be noted that the fuel dock is at the head of a fairway between the two T docks, leaving little room to maneuver. If you are at all unsure of your boat, or she’s on the larger side, you may have better luck Frenchman’s Cay Marina up the bay. There is a small chandlery there too. The government dock and customs is located across the bay on the north side, a short dinghy ride away. This is a great place to meet or drop off crew, especially those coming in from St. Thomas or other points in the USVI.

Don't Miss: Stopping in for a sip at the Pusser’s in the heart of Soper’s Hole. It’s a fantastic, laid back open-air bar that sits wharfside with an unbeatable view of the goings on in the bay. The TV will keep you in tune with civilization, or you can tune it out and settle into the island rythms. Locals and yachties alike keep this place humming just about all day.
