Updated 2.15.07

Hi Y'all. Here's the tentative itinerary for Free Luff's passage south to Panama, then through The Canal and up to San Diego. A couple of things BEFORE YOU EVEN LOOK at the calendar below:

1) Sailboats and schedules DO NOT MIX. This is a loose plan that will inevitably change a number of times due to mechanical problems, weather, a better plan, etc. Keep checking back often, even right up to the time you are leaving, via this page, email, and phone.

2) Because of this, YOU MUST BE FLEXIBLE ON YOUR TRAVEL DATES, and book airline tickets as late as possible, with as much built-in flexibility as you can. Your airports in and out may change within a week of your travel. Hopefully not. But these things can happen. If you only have, say, ten days before you absolutely have to be back, maybe look at doing a 7 or 8 day segment so you have a little buffer on either end...

3) This should be a great time, but THIS IS NOT A LOUNGE-FEST TROPICAL BEACH TRIP. We are delivering Free Luff to a destination many thousands of miles away, and need to keep up a certain pace. Although the pace will be slower than just about any other delivery, and we are building lazy days into the trip, these may get eaten up by mechanical breakdowns, airport runs, weather delays etc. Most of the time will be spent under sail. If we are on schedule, there will be plenty of time for beach walks and lounging. but if we are behind schedule, we will be pushing the boat a bit more to get back on track, with more time at sea and less time for playing on shore or snorkeling. YOU WILL NEED TO BE FLEXIBLE ABOUT HOW YOU SPEND YOUR TIME.

4) If you are interested in a portion of the trip, you must let us know ASAP so we can add you to this calendar. Even if you're not sure. That way, everyone knows who is penciled in for what part, and what parts are available. Then keep us updated as your plans evolve. Just send Jody an email if you're interested, and we'll get you goin'. We know this will generate lots of questions, so bring 'em on! (Just remember to read this whole page, including the notes below, first. Thanks.)

Having said all that, this itinerary is here so that friends and family can try to figure out when they'd like to join as crew for a segment of the journey, cuz it's going to be a lot of fun, and we could use the help. On all legs we will be trying to have four or more people on board, with a minimum of three (including Randy, who will be on board the whole time). We encourage you to join us whenever you can, regardless of your sailing experience. We will do the best we can to build crews that include the proper levels of experience. Mostly, in the Caribbean anyway, we need more eyes and ears, not so much old salts who could do this by themselves... See the Notes section below for more details.

Notes:
Mileage will vary a bit from day to day in order to give the crew a rest, build nice breaks into the trip, and see some cool places. Anything more than 40 or 50 miles is a pretty solid day of sailing, especially to windward (see below).

Days and Mileage for each leg (days listed include the fly in and fly out days):
Caribbean Leg #1: 309 Miles, 7 days
#2: 204 Miles, 8 days THIS LEG IS FULL.
#3: 142 Miles, 6 days THIS LEG IS FULL.
#4: 496 Miles, 9 days
#5: 677 Miles, 7 days THIS LEG IS FULL.
Panama Canal Leg: 50 Miles, 9 days (?), hopefully less- this depends on getting through the red tape...
Pacific Leg #1: 367 Miles, 7 days THIS LEG IS FULL.
#2: 1,302 Miles, 17 days THIS LEG IS FULL.
#3: 810 Miles, 11 days THIS LEG IS FULL.
#4: 838 Miles , 12 days

Sailing to windward is more rough and slow, but necessary on the first leg of the trip in the Caribbean, and from Acapulco north on the Pacific Side.
Reaching is the fastest, most comfortable sailing we will do, and makes up most of the middle legs of the Caribbean side, and should be most of the first two legs on the Pacific side (although winds can vary widely this time of year).
Running can be a bit rolly if the swells are big, but generally a fairly quick, comfortable point of sail. On a catamaran, we will actually be "tacking downwind" and carrying more speed than a monohull, making it more comfortable and faster than just running dead downwind. Hopefully we will have our new asymetrical spinnaker (the pretty sail) out a lot of the time.
Dates with an airport symbol and airport codes are days to fly in or out. Please wait as late as possible to book tickets to preserve your flexibility. Most of these airports will require a taxi or bus to meet the boat. Get ready for adventure!
Randy is on board for the whole thing, and so not on the crew notes for any of these days.
We have put airport codes on the calendar to make it easier for you to look into tickets.
There will be no drugs of any kind, save prescriptions, onboard Free Luff for the entirety of the trip. Alcohol consumption will be limited to time spent at anchor or ashore.
There will be no firearms aboard.
As far as expenses are concerned, the biggest thing by far will be your plane ticket(s). Other than that, you'll need $150-$200 or so to cover food and sundries, then some spending money for souvenirs. Pretty cheap, all together.
We're sure you have questions - Email Jody!
